Why these tropes fit

Twenty-year-old Selene Bowers hopes to enter Henbane Coven, an academy for young witches, and undertakes a wilderness quest in South America to awaken her powers. When a supernatural force attacks her plane, her magic saves her but begins devouring her memories. In the jungle she accidentally awakens Memnon the Cursed, an ancient evil who mistakes her for his long-dead, traitorous wife. After escaping, Selene begins her studies at Henbane, but Memnon appears on campus as witches turn up dead. Accused of the murders because of her memory gaps, Selene is forced to rely on her ancient enemy for answers, drawing her into his dangerous plans.
