Jenny Greenteeth, a river monster who has lived beneath the streets of Boston for hundreds of years, prefers her own company and has no qualms about feasting on human flesh, considering humans petty, dangerous, and fragile. After a chance encounter leaves her face to face with a handsome academic she doesn't want to eat—yet still kind of does—she is left hungry and curious. Confused by these conflicting feelings, she begrudgingly enlists two city-dwelling cryptids who have taken up residence in her station to help her track the mystery man down. Along the way, Jenny experiences the modern world for the first time, discovering catcalling, pigeons, protests, fashion, friendship, and Dunkin' Donuts. As she pursues the man she couldn't eat at first sight, Jenny finds herself falling in love and wrestling with two growing hungers: the desire to be seen and understood, and the craving for human flesh.
