Why these tropes fit
Twenty years after monsters rose and reshaped civilization, humans are confined to cramped, military-controlled coastal cities while the interior of the United States has become a lawless stretch of Wastes ruled by creatures. The narrator, a lonely twenty-three-year-old soldier deployed just six months ago, is assigned to a unit hunting Wyn the Soul Eater—a horned, hooded death monster who crosses the country every three years, draining humans to husks. When Wyn spares him out of hundreds slaughtered, the soldier is left to question what about him has drawn the monster's attention, setting up a romance between the hunter and the hunted in a dark, broken world.
