What does “HEA” mean in books?
HEA means happily ever after.
In romance, it signals that the central couple ends the story together with a lasting, optimistic resolution.
What it does—and does not—tell you
HEA describes the ending, not the amount of comedy or the heat level. A dark, suspenseful, or fantasy romance can also end happily. A single installment may end on a cliffhanger even when its completed series promises an HEA.
Use it when choosing a book
Check whether the promise applies to this book or to the whole series. Ask for an ending label without plot details if you want to avoid spoilers.
